Additive meter: what 6-6-6-7 actually means
Divisive versus additive
Western classical notation is overwhelmingly divisive. You take a bar, divide it into equal beats, and subdivide those beats into halves and quarters. It works beautifully for music whose pulse is regular.
Much of the world does not work that way. Balkan, Turkish, Indian, and a great deal of contemporary progressive music is additive: the bar is assembled from short and long cells, and the interest comes from the limp, the fact that one cell is longer than its neighbours.

Reading a cycle notation like 6-6-6-7
When musicians write 6-6-6-7 they mean a repeating cycle: three bars of six beats, then one bar of seven, then back to the start. The total is 25 beats. The seven is a turnaround, the extra beat is what makes the phrase resolve rather than simply repeat.
The practical consequence is that you should not think of it as a time-signature change. Nothing changes. It is a single 25-beat pattern with accents at beats 1, 7, 13 and 19, and it repeats forever. Once you hear it that way it stops being difficult.
Why most metronomes cannot do this
A conventional metronome models rhythm as "time signature plus tempo". You choose 7/8 from a list and it clicks seven times forever. That model has no way to express three bars of six followed by one of seven, because the pattern is longer than the unit the app understands.
Apps that do support groupings usually bury them: a settings screen for subdivisions, another for accents, often a paywall in between. By the time you have programmed the bar you have lost the idea you were chasing.
The alternative is to drop the time-signature model entirely and treat a rhythm as what it is, a list of beats, each of which is loud, normal, quiet or silent. Then 6-6-6-7 is not a special feature. It is just twenty-five beats with four of them accented.
Groupings worth learning
- 2+3 and 3+2, the five-beat cells underneath almost all odd-meter folk music.

No. It is a cycle notation describing four consecutive bars, three of six beats and one of seven, that repeat as a 25-beat unit. It is more useful to treat it as one long pattern than as four separate time signatures.
What is the difference between additive meter and odd meter?
Odd meter describes any bar whose beat count is not divisible by two or three, such as 5 or 7. Additive meter describes how that bar is built, by adding unequal cells like 2+2+3. Most odd meters in practice are additive.
How do I hear the grouping rather than count it?
Practise the accents alone with no beats in between until the shape is recognisable as a shape, the way you recognise a melody. Then fill the subdivision back in.
