Polyrhythm: two divisions of one span
In a 3:2 polyrhythm, one voice plays three even notes while another plays two, and both start and finish together. The pulse itself is being divided two different ways at the same moment. The classic teaching phrase is "nice cup of tea", say it evenly and the three syllables of "cup of tea" land against two claps.
Polyrhythms are a vertical phenomenon. The tension is inside the beat, and it resolves every time the cycle comes round.
Polymeter: one pulse, different bar lengths
In a polymeter, everyone agrees on the pulse, the eighth notes tick past identically for all players, but one part groups them in fours and another in sevens. Because 4 and 7 only line up every 28 beats, the accents drift against each other and slowly rotate back into alignment.
Polymeter is a horizontal phenomenon. Nothing conflicts within any single beat; the interest is in how long it takes the patterns to agree again.

A common confusion worth clearing up
Most music sold as "polyrhythmic" is actually polymetric. Metal bands playing a repeating five-beat riff over a four-beat backbeat are not dividing a span two ways, they share the pulse exactly and simply group it differently. The distinction matters when you practise, because the two need opposite approaches.

How to practise each

- In both cases, learn where the cycle resolves before you speed up. The resolution point is the anchor that stops you drifting.
